What’s Entertainment? Notes Toward a Definition

Entertainment has been a part of all cultures, from the Chauvet Cave paintings to the iPad. For Rothman, it is “the storehouse of national values” (xviii). Perhaps nowhere is that observation more apt than in the United States, a nation that Gabler terms a “republic of entertainment” (11). Many Americans seem to feel entitled to high-quality entertainment (Zillmann and Vorderer viii), and more and more entertainment jostles for their attention
(Wolf 46). Zillmann goes so far as to predict that entertainment “will define, more than ever before, the civilizations to come” (“Coming of Media En- tertainment” 18). The importance of entertainment can be gauged by a study conducted byBrock and Livingston (259). They asked 115 American undergraduates how much money they would require in order to give up television for the rest of their lives. More than half said they would demand over a million dollars, with several naming amounts exceeding a billion dollars.

Despite the centrality of entertainment to society, however, academia has treated the subject in a disjointed, scattershot, sometimes condescending fashion, for a variety of reasons. To start with, the earliest communication theorists chose to study the mass media in terms of persuasion rather than entertainment, and most subsequent scholarship has retained that em-phasis (Katz and Foulkes 376; Singhal and Rogers 120). Furthermore, many scholars look on entertainment as too trivial for study (Shusterman 291). They believe that entertainment amounts principally “to taking up large amounts of the daily time of individuals, but not representing an important force for human behavior change” (Singhal and Rogers 120). In addition, different disciplines have asserted dominion over different aspects of the topic. Scholars of communications, film, literature, art, popular culture, leisure, history, psychology, sociology, economics, policy, law, neuroscience, and other disciplines all have claimed partial, often overlapping authority. But the importance of the whole has been neglected: no single discipline has undertaken to map the vast landscape of entertainment. Lieb observes that theorists have largely failed to explain “what entertainment is, what kind of functions it inherits, and how much further it may expand” (226).Vorderer deems the academic response to entertainment “astonishing, to the point of being incomprehensible” (“Entertainment Theory” 131).

To be sure, some entertainment scholars may see no need for any single, overarching definition. For them, a subjective approach (discussed below) suffices: entertainment is whatever individuals find entertaining. But we believe that development of a more objective definition can help unify and advance the field of entertainment studies. Terminological exactitude, after all, is a basic foundation of scholarship. We follow the example of Browne, who in 1972 published “Popular Culture: Notes Toward a Definition.” He wrote, “Despite the obvious difficulty of arriving at a hard and fast definition of popular culture, it will probably be to our advantage—and a comfort to many who need one—to arrive at some viable though tentative understanding of how popular culture can be defined”.

So, with due acknowledgment that some may see our undertaking as bootless, this article sketches different approaches to defining entertainment and then proposes a set of criteria. Our hope is to help launch a conversation, one that can fruitfully continue as diverse approaches to the study of entertainment arise and mature.

We begin with two observations that, though perhaps commonplace, ought to be kept in mind. First, entertainment often does more than entertain—or, put differently, entertainment functions are often intertwined with nonentertainment functions. According to Staiger, children and teens spent more time at movies during World War II in part because mothers were working, so theaters became de facto day-care centers (22). Katz and Foulkes similarly observe that families may watch TV together in order to bond (382). Second, and regrettably, “There are few things less entertaining than trying to define mass entertainment” (Bosshart and Macconi 3).

Analysis of Popular Culture: Jackass, South Park, and ‘Everyday’ Culture

Various textual practices have been interpreted within the Bakhtinian framework of carnival, including popular cultural texts such as The Big Lebowski (Martin & Renegar, 2007), Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and 12 Monkeys (Dimitrakaki & Tsiantis, 2002); the animated series The Simpsons (Gray, 2006); the news and entertainment journal The Onion (Achter, 2008); horror fiction The Shining (Holland-Toll, 1999) and Shelley’s novel Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus (Holquist, 1994), the television series Jackass (Brayton, 2007); and even the political campaign of Jesse Ventura (Janack, 2006). In these academic works, popular culture has been theorized in many different ways: as escapist, as resistant to the ideology of capitalism, or as containing “visions of utopia, collectivity or even emancipation” (Dimitrakaki & Tsiantis, 2002, p. 209). However, the carnivalesque is not restrained to popular culture texts, but transcends to ‘everyday’ life encompassing the lives of creators, those of audiences, and the directors of television programs and shows. Contemporary carnival is everyday’ life itself. The social environment contains the ambiguous traces of carnival: it resists the ideology of capitalism and, at the same time, reproduces the capitalist social order. Thus, a carnivalesqus analysis provides additional information not only to various phenomena of popular culture, but to the social and political environment of ‘everyday’ life.

The article opens with a discussion of the Bakhtinian notion of carnival then continues with an analysis of various popular culture texts, such as South Park and Jackass. Further, the study reveals how carnivalesque futures penetrate not only popular culture texts but also the contemporary social environment and thus, these organize one inseparable system. Finally, the conclusion discusses the findings of the analysis.

The Bakhtinian Perception of Carnival

Many authors have devoted their works to interpreting carnival in different ways and have constructed particular discourses of carnival. Various events that have taken place at different times (Castle, 1986; Kolyazin, 2002) and in different countries (Mitchell, 1995; Lewis and Pile, 1996; Lindahl, 1996; Nurse, 1999;Tokofsky, 1999) have been described as being a ‘carnival.’ The matrix of ideas introduced by these different authors organizes the discourse of carnival.

This study however, focuses onMikhail Bakhtin’s (1895 – 1975) concept of carnival and its influence on modern popular-cultural texts and ‘everyday’ life. For Bakhtin, carnival is a world of ambivalent festive laughter, which brings together oppositions, sublimates death and dispels the fear of death by bringing birth and death together (Bakhtin 1984, p. 51). Laughter for the sake of laughter; mocking the present official political system, religious dogmas and authoritative figures; grotesque realism; billingsgate language; degradation of high images; celebration of the lower bodily stratum; crowning and decrowning of the king (Bakhtin 1984); and masquerade are some distinguishing characteristics of the discourse of carnival constructed by Bakhtin. Bakhtinian carnival implies the ambiguity of life and a blurred borderline between actors and spectators which could have interesting consequences for the study of popular culture, because all these carnivalesque forms can be found in popular-cultural texts.

According to Bakhtin (1984), carnival is a utopian world of renewal, festivity and laughter (p. 9). For Bakhtin, everyone participates and lives in a second life that is beyond hierarchy, religious dogmas, official norms, and prohibitions. Yet this study will show that these traces are apparent not only in what Bakhtin (1984) calls, “a second life” (p. 8), but also in ‘everyday’ life of people.

‘Borat’ Make Benefit For Glorious Sick Day Stash

On Friday, November 3, 2006, I left school particularly quickly to meet my uncle at a movie theater nearby. My Uncle Mike was always the cool uncle, who knew good movies, so he had made a point of seeing “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” the day it came out. You can probably see why he was the cool uncle.

In the weeks leading up to that day, Sacha Baron Cohen’s first theatrical release was heralded as a wide variety of things, including “sexist,” “offensive” and “the funniest movie of all time.” Mostly unfamiliar with Borat’s previous appearances on “Da Ali G Show,” I wasn’t sure what to expect, but what I got was a new type of comedy that I’m still not sure I was ready for.

When “Borat” first came out, intrepid Kazakhstani journalist Borat Sagdiyev was more than an accent and the collection of catchphrases, like “Var niiccee!” and “How mauch?” that worked their way into frat boy-friendly pop culture references. Borat was shocking and dangerous in a way that most formulaic studio comedies wouldn’t dare to be. Baron Cohen put himself in situation where he realistically could get hurt, but his dedication to the bit instead transitioned each encounter into classic comedy.

Baron Cohen’s new film in theaters this week, “The Dictator,” takes a head-on approach to criticizing both America and the foreign dictatorships it struggles against, but even without a main character seemingly ripped out of the front pages, “Borat” managed to comment on significant issues like the country’s attitudes towards foreigners, racism and homophobia in a hysterically subversive way. Most of the laughs in “Borat” live and die with the audience’s tolerance of awkward situations and the decimation of unspoken social agreements.

Though “Borat” hasn’t necessarily aged well in the collective cultural memory?many now consider it a comedic fad along the lines of “Napoleon Dynamite”?but separated from that current standing, Baron Cohen’s first major release remains his finest with his brand of brutally honest comedy still as biting as ever.

Call them “cult classics.” “Guilty pleasures.” “Comfort movies.” We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. These are some of ours. Tell us about your Sick Day Stash picks in the comments or on Twitter!

Beliebers Download Justin Bieber’s ‘Boyfriend’ To Tune Of 500K

As expected, Justin Bieber’s new single “Boyfriend” has made an impressive debut. After dropping last Monday, the song has sold 520,000 downloads in its first week.

The number is particularly meaningful since it places him at #2 in all-time first-week singles sales. Flo Rida’s track “Right Round,” featuring a then up-and-coming Ke$ha, has the Biebs beat, according to Hits Daily Double. Flo’s track sits at #1 with 636,000 units moved. Other big sellers include the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” with 465,000 in downloads (#3), and Mother Monster herself, Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” selling 447,000 (#4).

Not only are fans gobbling up the single, but his real-life girlfriend, Selena Gomez, has given the song two thumbs up. “Is it my ring tone? No. I didn’t even know you could make it a ring tone,” Gomez told E! News. “It is a great song.”

Bieber is hardly resting on his laurels. The teen star is back in the studio working on Believe. He explained on Twitter that the album, for which “Boyfriend” is the lead single, will go there. “Here making music addressing the past and the rumors, clearing it all up in the music. Im putting it all out there on this album. #BELIEVE,” he tweeted.

He also tweeted out silly videos of himself acting goofy on mock-up sets of the “Boyfriend” video, which he shot last week. In one, he stands in front of a green screen of icy land and in another he stands in front of a green screen of a fireplace.

Of course, Bieber already shared that there really will be fire and ice in the video. “The concept of this video, I mean it’s not like a steady concept,” he explained to MTV News on the Cali-based set in between shots. “It’s not like ‘Justin follows this girl to this spot.’ No, it’s a bunch of amazing scenes: Like a fire scene, we have an ice scene.

“It’s kind of like bouncing back and forth,” he said. “And then there’s scenes of me and just a bunch of girl dancers, and just some great shots, great artistic shots, great shots of me smiling. It’s fun.”

Lady Gaga Cancels Show In Indonesia After Protests

Lady Gaga lives to provoke and push the envelope. But not everyone is up for her antics. The “Americano” singer has been forced to cancel her sold-out June 3 “Born This Way Ball” show at the 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia after Islamic hard-liners and conservative lawmakers said her sexy costumes, suggestive dance moves and “vulgar” style could corrupt the nation’s youth.

According to the Associated Press, a spokesperson for the national police said on Tuesday (May 15) that the permit for the show has been denied after religious conservatives worried that the concert could undermine the nation’s moral fiber. Some of the critics actually threatened to use physical force to prevent Gaga from getting off her plane. Though Indonesia is a secular state, it has the world’s largest population of Muslims and a small extremist fringe of religious leaders has been more vocal in recent years.

“She’s a vulgar singer who wears only panties and a bra when she sings and she stated she is the envoy of the devil’s child and that she will spread satanic teaching,” said Salim Alatas, the Jakarta head of hardline Islamic Defender Front (FPI), according to Reuters. “This is dangerous.”

Local police worried that they might not be able to guarantee security at the show and suggested to national police that the permit for what was to be Gaga’s biggest gig on her current Asian tour be pulled. Every seat at the Karno stadium had been sold, with half of them going in the first two hours.

The AP reported that permits for shows are typically issued three weeks before concerts in Jakarta, so it is not uncommon for tickets to be sold well ahead of receiving a final permit. Gaga’s Asian tour started last month and the Indonesian flap is not the first bump she’s faced along the road. Gigs in South Korea? were 18-and-over because conservatives in that country also raised objections over the concert’s content.

Justin Bieber: ‘I Can’t Not Dance Battle Usher’

Justin Bieber and his mentor, Usher, believe it or not, have engaged in a dance-off or two. While Bieber is certainly known for his ability to cut a rug, he noted that his pal has the smoother of the dance moves.

“Dance-offs? We had one the other night. He did this little show in New York,” Bieber explained to MTV News earlier this month about facing off against Usher during his stint in the off-Broadway “Fuerza Bruta” in April. “Mid-show, he comes in the middle of the dance floor and does a dance battle with me. And I’m like ‘I’m too tired for this.’ He pulls out moves and I can’t not dance battle Usher.

“So I go in there, do my whole thing,” he recalled. “I’m pretty sure I lost, but it’s all good.”

When they aren’t battling it out on the dance floor, it seems Usher is offering up some sage advice to the 18-year-old singer. “He’s just given me the advice of ‘Always keep the people that were there in the beginning, keep them with you because those are the people that really care. They want to see you succeed,’ ” he said. “I think that’s probably pretty much the main thing he’s always told me.”

Usher has even more to share about working with his superstar mentee. He will open up during “MTV First: Usher,” set to take place tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. He will introduce exclusive footage from “Fuerza Bruta” and his new single, the Pharrell-produced “Twisted,” and will stick around for an interview with MTV News’ Sway Calloway to discuss it all, including his new June release, Looking 4 Myself, on MTV.com afterward. Fans can submit questions via MTV.com or Twitter @MTVNews with the hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskUsher.

Don’t miss “MTV First: Usher” tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an interview with the singer on MTV.com!

Lady Gaga Under Fire After ‘PopStarsDontEat’ Comment

What was clearly intended as a jokey tweet lamenting the rigorous diet and exercise routine she is currently undertaking to prepare for her 110-date Born This Way Ball has put Lady Gaga in the crosshairs of some angry fans and eating-disorder organizations. On Tuesday, the pop star tweeted, “Just killed back to back spin classes. Eating a salad dreaming of a cheeseburger #PopSingersDontEat #IWasBornThisWay.” Some fans thought the tweet wasn’t exactly keeping with the pop star’s “You’re perfect the way you are” message and that her choice of the “#PopStarsDontEat” hashtag could be misinterpreted as encouraging eating disorders because she posits herself as a role model to her fans.

The National Eating Disorder Association even weighed in, hitting its own Twitter account to write, “Huh? This is the same person who recently implored girls to stop dieting?”

MTV Buzzworthy has an Open Letter To Lady Gaga While it seems clear that Gaga was joking ? who hasn’t dove into a salad wishing it was something else? ? the comment does appear out of character for the star, who has spoken publicly about her own struggles with an eating disorder as a teen. Using that particular hashtag might have been a poor choice, but it’s safe to say Lady Gaga wasn’t knowingly making light of eating disorders ? and, otherwise, wasn’t she mostly just encouraging exercise and healthy eating? Gaga tweets often about all sort of less-than-healthful habits, from drinking (“after 12 margaritas my phone was confiscated”) to, well, other things (“princess xena of xanaxland has lil secrets in her inbox”). Why she is being scrutinized for making an observation about something we already know ? that celebrities engage in intense fitness regimens to meet the unrealistic expectations placed on their appearance ? is kind of a mystery. But, you know, totally appropriate and necessary reason for outrage, everyone. Sound off on Gaga’s #PopSingersDontEat tweet in the comments below!

Sandra Bullock’s ‘Gravity’ Shifts To 2013 Release Date

Alfonso Cuaron is doing some crazy stuff in his upcoming film, “Gravity.” In fact, it seems like it’s so out of this world (literally) that Warner Bros has opted to push the movie’s release date back until 2013.

Originally “Gravity” was expected to hit theaters in November, just in time for awards season, but the effects-heavy film was recently test screened for some audiences to mixed reviews. Many commented that the CGI was “far from being done,” which might have spurred the current delay.

That leaves “Gravity” without an official release date, though at least now “Gangster Squad” has been slated in for September 7. After a great first trailer, the Ruben Fleischer-directed period drama has garnered some serious buzz.

“Gravity” stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, though the movie is said to largely follow Bullock by herself in space. She plays a medical engineer named Dr. Ryan Stone who is out on her first shuttle mission with Clooney’s veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky. They participate in a routine spacewalk, but disaster causes their shuttle to be destroyed and the two of them are left stranded in the middle of space tied to nothing but one another.

When MTV News caught up with Guillermo del Toro last August, he said he was blown away by what Cuaron is planning.

“I’m amazed at Alfonso the past few movies because he’s completely transformed himself. ['Gravity' is] incredibly well-calculated. Very human, if you know the story,” he said. “[They're] absolutely pushing a new boundary in filmmaking, completely mindblowing. And the way they’re making that movie will, I think, forever change certain types of productions.”

Are you disappointed “Gravity” has been pushed back? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!

Cannes Film Festival: Our Top 10 Must-See Movies

Hollywood is officially headed to the French Riviera for the 65th Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off Wednesday. With so much of the attention Stateside focused squarely on the “Rob and Kristen Factor,” we thought it would be helpful to take a look at the lineup and share the films we are most excited about at the upcoming festival.

Here are our top 10 most anticipated movies at the Cannes Film Festival:

10. “The Paperboy”
This adaptation of the Peter Dexter novel marks Lee Daniels’ first film since making it big on the indie scene with “Precious.” “The Paperboy” promises a different direction for Daniels, telling the story of a reporter (John Cusack) who travels back to his home town to investigate a death-row case.

9. “Reality”
Director Matteo Garrone made waves at Cannes in 2008 with his hyper-real look at Neapolitan organized crime, “Gomorrah,” which won the Grand Jury Prize that year. For this year’s festival, he returns with “Reality,” a look at the way we perceive life since the dawn of reality television.

8. “Cosmopolis”
Robert Pattinson’s name alone has drawn much attention to this in-competition film, but the true nature of its intrigue lies with its director, David Cronenberg. With his adaptation of Don DeLillo’s novel, Cronenberg, with the help of Pattinson, of course, looks to be revisiting the bizarre aesthetics and subject matters that made him famous in the 1980s. We’ve been waiting for this one ever since it won the MTV Movie Brawl 2012 back in January.

7. “Like Someone in Love”
“Certified Copy,” the previous film from Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, earned Juliette Binoche a best actress award at Cannes in 2010, but the film itself is one of the best examples of pure art-house filmmaking in the past few years. With “Like Someone in Love,” Kiarostami shifts his focus from Italy to Japan but keeps the same entry point of a man and a woman who may or may not know each other.

6. “Amour”
“The White Ribbon,” Michael Haneke’s previous film tangentially about the saplings of fascism in Germany, wowed audiences on the Croisette in 2009, and “Amour” seems poised to do the same. The film tells the story of Georges and Anne, an octogenarian couple whose bond comes under strain after one of them suffers an attack.

5. “On the Road”
Similar to “Cosmopolis,” “On the Road” has drawn a great deal of attention because it features a “Twilight” star, in this case Kristen Stewart, but she only makes up an element of this insanely star-studded Jack Kerouac adaptation, which also stars Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen and Terrence Howard.

4. “Lawless”
Formerly known as “Wettest County,” this Southern-set prohibition crime film boasts a cast featuring Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain, Gary Oldman and Guy Pearce and a critical darling of a director, John Hillcoat. The recently released trailer looks strong, and Hillcoat’s pedigree alone (his previous films include “The Proposition” and “The Road”) make this a must-see for the festival.

3. “Rust and Bone”
A film about a whale trainer who loses a leg to an orca doesn’t necessary seem like Palme d’Or material, but “Rust and Bone” comes from director Jacques Audiard, who took the Grand Jury Prize in 2009 with the impressive “A Prophet,” and it stars Marion Cotillard as the unfortunate trainer.

2. “Killing Them Softly”
It wouldn’t be surprising if you haven’t seen “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” but it would certainly be unfortunate. The western starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck debuted and left theaters quietly, but since 2007, the film has slowly gained a reputation as a modern classic. As director Andrew Dominik’s first film since “Jesse James,” “Killing Them Softly” stands out as both his reunion with Pitt and his much-anticipated follow-up.

1. “Mud”
A writer/director may take a few films to nail down their voice and storytelling identity, but with his first two movies, Jeff Nichols has not only established himself as a serious filmmaker, but also one of the most exciting auteurs working today. Those films, “Shotgun Stories” and “Take Shelter,” are two genuine masterpieces of American filmmaking, and we look forward to his third feature film “Mud,” starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon.
